It can be prepared by reacting nitrous acid (generated in situ by reacting a metal nitrite with a mineral acid) with n-butanol.

Butyl nitrite is highly flammable.

Butyl nitrite is one of the compounds used as poppers, an inhalant drug that induces a brief euphoria. The inhalants common street name is RUSH.
