The two plovercrests comprise the genus Stephanoxis. They were formerly considered conspecific. The SACC accepted both as distinct species in 2015. The two species are:
- Green-crowned plovercrest (Stephanoxis lalandi)
- Purple-crowned plovercrest (Stephanoxis loddigesii)
