Saxidomus gigantea, common name the butter clam, is a large edible saltwater clam, a marine bivalve mollusk in the family Veneridae, the venus clams.[1] It can be found along the western coast of North America, ranging from the Aleutian Islands to San Francisco Bay.[2]
Numerous valves of this species have been found in the shell middens on Sidney Island in British Columbia, Canada.[3]
